‘Treason’ Accusation Punctuates Heated Arizona Senate Debate
Democrat Sinema condemns Republican McSally for smear tactics

One of the most contentious moments of the Arizona Senate debate Monday night involved Republican Martha McSally accusing Democrat Kyrsten Sinema of “treason,” bringing a more predictable back-and-forth to a dramatic end.

Over the course of the hourlong debate — their only scheduled one — the two congresswomen running to succeed retiring GOP Sen. Jeff Flake split over health care, immigration, and the Supreme Court’s newest justice. Sinema stressed that she would be independent of her party, while McSally touted the accomplishments of GOP-controlled government.

At her first and likely only public debate with Virginia Rep. Dave Brat on Monday, Democrat Abigail Spanberger felt the need to remind the Republican congressman that he is running against her, and “certainly not” against House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

“Abigail Spanberger is my name,” the Democratic challenger in Virginia’s 7th District said to punctuate her closing statement.

Texas Democratic Senate candidate Rep. Beto O’Rourke raised a record $38.1 million in the third quarter, the campaign announced Friday, nearly tripling his overall fundraising haul for the cycle.

The blockbuster quarter surpasses the record for the largest fundraising quarter ever in a U.S. Senate race — set by Rick Lazio in his race against Hillary Clinton in New York in 2000.

CNN will host two Florida debates and a town hall for Texas Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke as campaigns across the country round onto the home stretch before the Nov. 6 midterm elections.

The network announced the live events Tuesday.

The super PAC tied to House Republican leadership is launching a new ad aimed at Democrat Kim Schrier in the competitive open-seat race in Washington’s 8th District. 

Congressional Leadership Fund’s latest ad, provided first to Roll Call, knocks Schrier’s support for a state income tax — citing a candidate questionnaire — and an energy tax. If elected to Congress, she would not have influence over taxes administered by the state government.

A death threat toward Rep. Dave Brat’s Democratic challenger from a man who commented on a Facebook post from Brat in September has reappeared after it was previously hidden from the page.

At 7:05 p.m. on September 6, a Facebook user named Rodney Arrington, who frequently comments on Brat’s official page, appeared to threaten the Virginia Republican's Democratic challenger, Abigail Spanberger.

A new poll from End Citizens United found the race for California’s 45th District essentially tied, as Democrats try to unseat two-term Republican Rep. Mimi Walters in their effort to win back the House. 

Forty-eight percent of respondents backed Democratic challenger Katie Porter while 47 percent supported Walters in the survey conducted by GBA Strategies and shared first with Roll Call.

The super PAC aligned with Speaker Paul D. Ryan is doubling down on its messaging strategy to paint vulnerable Rep. Dave Brat’s Democratic challenger in Virginia’s 7th District as sympathetic to terrorist elements.

In a new ad released Thursday, and shared first with Roll Call, Congressional Leadership Fund once again highlights Democrat Abigail Spanberger’s stint as a substitute teacher at the Saudi-funded Islamic Saudi Academy in Mount Vernon, Virginia, that began in 2002.

The race for Rep. Dave Brat’s bid for a third term in Virginia’s 7th District appears to be tightening, according to a new Monmouth University poll that shows the conservative House Freedom Caucus member trailing former CIA officer Abigail Spanberger by 5 points.

Spanberger captured support from 47 percent of the 400 potential voters pollsters surveyed by phone from Sept. 15 through Sept. 24. Brat garnered 42 percent support among potential voters — which the Monmouth poll characterizes as voters who have participated in at least one election since 2010 or have newly registered to vote (a group that represents roughly nine in 10 of all registered voters in the district).
